'Iron Man 3' May Be Directed by 'Lethal Weapon' Writer Shane Black

Shane Black may come in as the replacement of Jon Favreau for "Iron Man 3". The Hollywood Reporter says the filmmaker who made his name for writing "Lethal Weapon" is in contention to direct the third "Iron Man" film.

Black has reportedly had meeting with Marvel executives about his take on the upcoming project. While he is now only considered for the directing job, he may also write a draft if he lands the gig. Insiders, however, note that "Black's involvement is far from a sure thing", and the studio are looking at other directors as well.

An actor/director/writer, Shane Black is known for his works in some of the late
1980s and early 1990s biggest action films including "The Last Boy Scout". He once teamed up with Robert Downey Jr. for well-regarded "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", which Black directed and co-wrote.

If Black nabs the job, he will reunite with Downey Jr. who is set to reprise his role as Tony Stark aka Iron Man in "Iron Man 3". The movie is slated for May 3, 2013 release in the U.S. with Walt Disney Studios handling the distribution and marketing.

The helmer's seat in "Iron Man 3" is vacant after Jon Favreau, who directed "Iron Man" and "Iron Man 2", announced he parted ways with the franchise in late 2010. He will next direct "Magic Kingdom" which is developed for Disney.
