Disney Taps G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA Scribes to Pen GARGOYLES Film

I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering why anyone would want to take the very gothic and dark Disney cartoon series from the ‘90s to the silver screen. Yet, that is not what this project revolves around. Instead, screenwriters David Elliot and Paul Lovett (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) are the latest to take a crack at a live-action film that involves gargoyles coming to life (the film would be quite boring if they didn’t). The film is said to involve the statues watching over the cities where they are located, as architectural “guardian angels.” For more on the project, hit the jump.
For those worried that the scribes of the Joe film might not be who they want cracking the gargoyle egg, I should remind you that they also wrote the entertaining Four Brothers over at Paramount. Clearly, those two credits are very different in terms of tone, so I am curious to see what kind of approach they have to this property. As for who is behind this project, Variety reports that producer Lauren Shuler Donner (All X-Men related films at 20th Century Fox) and Disney executive LouAnne Brickhouse will oversee the pic for the studio. Not surprisingly, the studio is keen on making this more than just a one-off film, and has ideas of turning it into a merchandising opportunity that includes videogames, theme park rides, and a TV show.

How they keep the Gargoyles cartoon of the past separate from the one of the future is not clear at this point, especially with intentions to make it into a TV show. In addition, I should state clearly that I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the cartoon while growing up, so my initial skepticism is not based on the quality of the product. However, in that incarnation, it does not seem readily adaptable to a live-action film. Then again, I never thought we would see board games turned into live action films either.
