'Avengers' Debuts New Apocalyptic Character Posters

Walt Disney Pictures has just dropped four brand new character posters from "The Avengers". Exposing an apocalyptic-themed background, those fresh one-sheets highlight Black Widow, Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man and Hawkeye each with their trademark weapon. Thor, however, is not featured in any of the images.

Along with the release of the new posters, Disney confirmed that tickets for select midnight screenings for the anticipated superhero movie are already available for purchase starting March 12. On the same day, AMC Theaters announced that it will host Marvel movie marathon event leading up to the midnight screening of the Joss Whedon-directed ensemble film.

Being scheduled to hit theaters across the U.S. on May 4, "The Avengers" will bring the Earth Mightiest Heroes to fight the biggest foe no single hero could withstand. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Samuel L. Jackson are lining up in the cast ensemble.

Speaking about the much-speculated secret villains in the hotly anticipated comic book movie, director Whedon recently made it clear that his upcoming film will feature neither Skrulls nor Kree. "I will say only this: It is not the Kree or the Skrulls," he stated while attending a panel for "The Cabin in the Woods" at the 2012 SXSW festival.

Of the reason why both iconic alien creatures will not be included in the film, the New York-born filmmaker said, "Those two aliens are Marvel mainstays and have enormous backstories." He added, "They have a big life of their own that just could not be contained in a film where I already had seven movie stars."
