'Madagascar 3' Still Secures Champion Title on Box Office

DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" stays atop North American box office for the second consecutive week. Dropping 41% from last week, the third installment of the "Madagascar" film franchise collects around $35.5 million for a total domestic cume of $120.4 million.

Staying on the runner-up spot is Ridley Scott's well-reviewed space thriller, "Prometheus". The Noomi Rapace-starring sci-fi movie takes in an estimated $20.2 million, falling 60% from last week. After two weeks of playing in the U.S. cinemas, the movie earns a total domestic cume of $88.8 million.

"Rock of Ages" has a relatively weak opening as it lands on the third place. Grossing around $15 million, the Tom Cruise-starring musical pic fails to attract younger moviegoers despite having Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta as the leading cast. Almost 75% of the ticketbuyers are over the age of 25, with females making up 62% of them.

Commenting on the disappointing result, Warner Bros. Pictures president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman says, "The numbers aren't great. It's hard to fathom since the movie plays so well." Though so, he notes, "I'm still optimistic we can overperform during the week because of women."

Securing the fourth place is "Snow White and the Huntsman" with an estimated $13.8 million. Starring Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth, the fairytale movie bags a total domestic cume of $122.6 million after playing in cinemas nationwide for two weeks.

Rounding up the top five is newcomer "That's My Boy". Just like "Rock of Ages", the Adam Sandler-starring comedy movie performs below the studio's expectation on its debut weekend. It only grabs approximately $13 million, marking Sandler's lowest debut for a comedy since "Spanglish" grossed $8.8 million in 2004.

"Sure we had hoped for more. It is a crazy, off-the-wall raunchy R-rated comedy that audiences laugh like crazy at. Kudos to Adam for mixing it up," Sony Pictures president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer says of the film. "We love being in the Adam Sandler business."
