Sony Pictures has offered Kate Beckinsale the role of Lori opposite Colin Farrell in their Total Recall remake. Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, and Jessica Biel have each read for the part of Lori. This is the first time Beckinsale has been linked to the film, though her involvement is no surprise: Beckinsale is slightly married to the director, Len Wiseman. They previously collaborated on the Underworld movies.
If Beckinsale accepts, Biel has a backup; early reports suggested the actress is after the role of Melina. Yet that may prove yet another dead end for Ms. Biel. Deadline hears Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson are “the serious contenders” for the role. Bryan Cranston is confirmed to play villain Vilos Cohaagen in the remake. Here is the synopsis for the 1990 Total Recall, loosely based on the Philip K. Dick story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale”:
Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a 21st-century construction worker who discovers that his entire memory of the past derives from a memory chip implanted in his brain. Schwarzenegger learns that he’s actually a secret agent who had become a threat to the government, so those in power planted the chip and invented a domestic lifestyle for him. Once he has realized his true identity, he travels to Mars to piece together the rest of his identity, as well as to find the man responsible for his implanted memory.
Sharon Stone played Lori, Schwarzenegger’s spouse; Rachel Ticotin played Melina, a Martian freedom fighter.
Details on the approach to updating the story were passed along in the Cranston casting report:
The new story involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai, with Douglas Quaid (Farrell) a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy, although he doesn’t know for which side. Cranston would play Vilos Cohaagen, the leader of Euromerica who, under the cover of protecting his people, is secretly readying an invasion of New Shanghai.
Up next for Beckinsale is a reprisal of the character Selene in Underworld 4: New Dawn, scheduled for release January 20, 2012. Two months later on March 16, 2012, Beckinsale will star opposite Mark Wahlberg in the thriller Contraband.
