Disney Commissions Script for Possible PROM Sequel

Prom is scheduled for a release on April 29 — speaking as a fan of teen melodrama with a sense of humor, I am optimistic.  I am encouraged by Disney’s confidence in the property.  THR reports the studio has commissioned a script from Prom screenwriter Katie Wech for another teen movie.  Technically, plot details are under wraps, but the implication is this teen movie could function as a sequel to Prom.  The idea is to get the ball rolling so that, in the event Prom connects with audiences, Disney will have a sequel ready to go at the same time next year.  THR suggests the film could follow the underclassmen from the first movie as they become seniors — I hope Disney hops between states each year, checking in on the proms of teenagers all across America.  (Prom: Alaska!)
Aimee Teegarden, Thomas McDonell, Danielle Campbell, Yin Chang, Kylie Bunbury, Nicholas Braun, Jared Kusnitz, Jonathan Keltz, De’Vaughn Nixon, Nolan Sotillo, Cameron Monaghan, Joe Adler, Janelle Ortiz, and Raini Rodriguez star.  Read the official synopsis for Prom after the break. The synopsis:
At “Prom,” every couple has a story and no two are exactly alike. Several intersecting stories unfold at one high school as the big dance approaches; “Prom” portrays the precarious passage from high school to independence as some relationships unravel and others ignite.  For Nova Prescott (Aimee Teegarden), it’s a battle of wills as she finds herself drawn to the guy (Thomas McDonell) who gets in the way of her perfect prom. Fellow seniors Mei (Yin Chang) and Tyler (De’Vaughn Nixon) harbor secrets, while others face all the insecurity and anticipation that surrounds one of high school’s most seminal events. There are hundreds of nights in high school, but there’s only one “Prom.” Featuring an emerging ensemble cast and a powerful soundtrack, “Prom” hits theaters April 29, 2011.
