The investigation is still in early stages, but police reportedly have already decided to refer the case to the L.A. County D.A. for possible criminal prosecution, which is quite common for high-profile cases. They are now seeking to question the "Boyfriend" hitmaker and all potential witnesses.
Bieber and his camp remained mum on the matter and so did his girlfriend Selena Gomez who was with him during the altercation. Instead, he released a brand new single called "Die in Your Arms" and jetted off to Europe for a so-called "PHASE 1 of operation secret concerts!"
"Gonna focus on the important stuff. the music," so Bieber recently tweeted. Without mentioning the scuffle, Gomez, meanwhile, wrote, "THANKS YOU SO MUCH to my fans for always protecting me and being there for me. I can't thank you guys enough. I'm sorry I had to rush out. Love you guys."
Bieber went to a movie date with Gomez at The Commons in Calabasas, California before having a confrontation with the paparazzo at a parking lot outside the building. When police arrived at the scene earlier, the couple had already driven away.
He is named a suspect in the case. Any witness who has information about the incident that occurred on Sunday, May 27 is asked to contact detectives at (818) 878-1808. Anonymous tipsters, meanwhile, may contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
According to one legal expert Dmitry Gorin, the key issue in this case is whether or not Bieber acted in self-defense. "Bieber could face a charge if he pushed or hit the photographer and it was not in self-defense," Gorin told LA Times. "But it is not really a jail-time offense."
Gorin furthermore said Bieber might be a victim of "paparazzi trap." The former deputy district attorney and now a criminal defense lawyer stated, "These guys will often make it impossible for the celebrity to pass," which usually leads the star to confront them.
