The separation of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver has allegedly been a long time coming. As soon as the power couple released joint statement regarding their split on Monday night, May 9, TMZ came out with a report suggesting that Maria has been contemplating about divorce a couple years back.
The gossip site reported that Maria has been "miserable" in the marriage and planned to end it in 2009. She, however, put the plan on hold when her mother Eunice Shriver died. The former First Lady of California was said trying to push ahead with her plan again in January 2011, but shelved it once more when her father Sargent Shriver passed away.
Accordingly, Maria had enough with Arnold's infidelities and his being "impossible" to live with. Radar Online added by citing a source as saying, "She just needed to wait for the right time." Friends of the couple, however, insisted there was no third-party involved and time was not of the essence. "I don't think there was anything calculated about the timing," an insider told People Magazine.
"For seven years, they both took their jobs very seriously - he as Governor and she as First Lady - and they were very, very busy. They weren't concerned with how things look in the public eye," the inside source explained. "Whatever decision they made was after careful thought and through prayer and they did what they truly thought was right for themselves and their children."
Another source pointed out, "It's common for marriages at this point, where they are going through so many different things, to reach a period where they have to work harder at that marriage and work on it in their own way. It's obviously very hard for him. He is doing the best he can. He's a very optimistic person. He loves her dearly. They are working on this together."
Maria herself has given hints at personal troubles less than two months ago. In a minute-long video she posted on her site in late March, she shared her thoughts, "Like a lot of you, I'm in transition. People are asking me, 'What are you doing next? What ideas are you going to come up with?' It's so stressful not to know what you're doing next."
"People ask you what you're doing and they can't believe that you don't know what you're doing. And every idea that you have, you think, 'well, maybe I shouldn't do that,' " continued the 55-year-old who served as a guest editor on an issue of Oprah Winfrey's magazine, O.
Arnold and Maria announced their separation on Monday night. In a joint statement, the couple said, "This has been a time of great personal and professional transition for each of us. After a great deal of thought, reflection, discussion and prayer, we came to this decision together." While they are now living apart, they stated that they plan to continue to raise their four children together.
