Billy Joe Amstrong Is Back to Rescue 'American Idiot'

Billy Joe Amstrong is returning to the Broadway stage for one final stint in "American Idiot" after box office sales plummeted following his exit in February. The rocker helped to compose and write the hit musical, which is based on songs by his band Green Day, and he made his Broadway debut when he joined the cast for a short run of dates last September.

He reprised the role of drug dealer St. Jimmy in the New Year and bowed out of the production on February 27. His critically-acclaimed addition to the line-up sent box office sales soaring, but weekly profits suffered a sharp drop and fell from $1.3 million to $395,275 last week.

Armstrong has now agreed to come to the rescue of musical producers and will hit the stage again from April 5 for the Tony Award-winning show's final three weeks in the Big Apple. "American Idiot" debuted on Broadway in April 2010.
